Client Comfort is Everything: How I Create a Relaxed Environment
One of the most common things I hear from clients before their shoot is:
“We’re a bit nervous… we don’t really know what to do in front of the camera.”
And honestly? That’s completely normal! Most of us aren’t used to being photographed professionally. My job isn’t just to take beautiful photos, it’s to help you feel comfortable, relaxed, and confident so your true personality shines through.
When I photographed Jo and Andy’s gorgeous outdoor engagement session, they said:
“We felt so much more comfortable than we expected to in front of the camera. It was a lot of fun. Thank you so much.”
That’s my favourite type of feedback. So how do I create that kind of relaxed environment?
Getting to Know You Before the Shoot
Every session starts before we even pick up the camera. I always book a call or in-person consultation with my clients beforehand. This gives us a chance to:
Get to know each other and build a rapport
Talk through your ideas for the shoot, whether that’s locations, outfits, or the overall vibe (light and airy, warm and cozy, moody and romantic…)
Gauge how comfortable you are in front of the camera so I know how much direction you’d like on the day
By the time your session arrives, you already know me, and we have a plan in place. That means no awkward “what now?” moments, just an easy flow into capturing your story.
Guidance Without Stiff Posing
Some people love being directed, others prefer to be left to move naturally. Most fall somewhere in between! I’m always happy to give posing guidance if you’d like it, but I never want you to feel stiff or staged.
Instead, I’ll gently guide you into moments of connection, whether that’s holding hands, walking together, or simply laughing at one of my bad jokes. Those in-between moments are often the ones that turn into the most beautiful, natural photographs.
Conversation is Key
I’m not a silent observer during your session. You won’t find me hiding behind the lens in silence! I’ll chat with you, ask about your day, hear about your plans, and keep the energy light and natural.
I’ve found that conversation makes people forget about the camera. Before long, you’re just having fun, and I happen to be there capturing it. If laughter comes into play (which it often does), that’s even better. It makes for genuine smiles and real moments you’ll love looking back on.
Laughter is the Best Icebreaker
Feeling nervous? That’s okay. A little bit of laughter goes a long way in breaking the ice. Whether it’s through a silly prompt, a playful moment between you and your partner, or me telling a cheesy joke, laughter is often the bridge from feeling posed to feeling completely yourself.
Jo and Andy laughed their way through their engagement session, and you can see in the photos how their personalities came alive in front of the camera.
Why Comfort Matters
When you feel at ease, your photos aren’t just “pictures”, they become authentic memories. That’s why client comfort is at the heart of everything I do, whether I’m photographing a wedding, a family session, or professional headshots.
Because when you’re relaxed, your love, your joy, your personality, it all shines through. And that’s what makes a photograph truly timeless.
✨ Ready to feel comfortable in front of the camera? Whether it’s for your wedding, an engagement session, family shoot, or headshots, I’d love to help you feel relaxed and capture the real you.
