What to Wear to Your Family Photo Session 🍂
Your family photos should be full of joy, personality, and connection—not stress about what to wear. With my Autumn Mini-Sessions coming up this October, I thought I’d share a few tried-and-true tips for choosing outfits that will help you feel comfortable, confident, and camera-ready.
1. Confidence is key
The best outfit you can wear is one that makes you feel good. If you feel confident, it will shine through in your photos. Skip anything that feels too tight, too baggy, or simply “not you.”
2. Coordinate, don’t match
Gone are the days of identical jeans and white shirts (those photos date quickly and feel flat). Instead, choose 3 - 4 colours that complement each other. Think of a little colour palette for your family—mixing shades, textures, and layers so each person looks unique, but together you look cohesive.
3. Think seasonally
Since these sessions will be in October, lean into the rich, cosy colours of autumn. Some shades that photograph beautifully include:
Deep tones: burgundy, forest green, navy
Warm shades: mustard, rust, burnt orange
Soft neutrals: cream, camel, taupe, grey
Accent colours: teal, blush, dusty blue
Mixing these gives your photos depth and warmth, while still feeling natural against an autumn backdrop.
4. Layer it up
Autumn can be chilly, but bulky coats often hide shape and movement in photos. Instead, try layering—think jumpers over shirts, cardigans, gilets, tights with dresses, or scarves. This keeps everyone cosy without losing that relaxed, natural look.
5. Keep comfort in mind
Practicality matters, especially with children. Don’t dress little ones in stiff collars or shoes that pinch—it’ll only make them fidgety. Choose clothes they can move, run, and cuddle in. The same goes for you: comfortable shoes (especially if we’re in the woods) will make the experience much more relaxed.
6. Subtle details work best
Big logos, busy patterns, or slogan tops can distract from what really matters: your faces and the connections between you. Instead, let personalities shine through with accessories, layers, or a favourite texture or colour.
7. Have fun with it
These photos are about capturing your family as you are. Don’t stress about being “perfect” - a cosy knit, a playful scarf, or a pair of favourite boots can tell a story just as much as a polished outfit.
